Paqueta island of Paquetá Island The Paquetá Cemetery, or Santo Antônio Cemetery, is located at Rua Manoel de Macedo, one of the main of Paquetá Island, and was built in 1860, at the initiative of Dona Escholástico Maria Lisboa. From 1933, the administration was made by the City of Rio de Janeiro. At the time, painter Pedro Bruno was invited to be the cemetery’s artistic caretaker, a position he held with mastery even without receiving any compensation. The artist made the place a real art nook, as he did throughout the island. In the place he built a totally stone chapel, where he put two of his paintings, St. Francis of Assisi speaking to birds and Christ to the moonlight, both award -winning. The Paquetá Cemetery never allowed mausoleums and no other ostentation that distinguished between social classes, and this includes the grave of Pedro Bruno. Next to the human cemetery is another work of the painter, the exclusive bird cemetery, conserved and rebuilt by my grandfather Teófilo Coutinho.
